Our tips for taking photos

Camera phones and digital cameras are a great way to take photos to maximise the appeal of your property, when it is being viewed online.  Video is even better!

Here are some tips we have put together, for making those images really stand out.

Clear the room

We know you love your accessories, and they’re what really makes it your home.  However, people want to be able to picture it as their home, so it helps to clear away personal objects as much as possible.  Think minimal.

Furniture

Sometimes how we live isn’t how somebody else might wish to use the space.  If you have any large or easy to move furniture, which may make the room look cluttered, try and move this out of the room for the photograph.

It’s also appropriate to dress each room as it may be used.  So if you are using a dining room, or a spare room for something else, try and make it look more intended to its original use.

Go landscape

Taking photos in portrait often mean that the format won’t transfer well to the web.  Not only does it make it easy to take the photo by going landscape, it also gets more of the room in view, and works better online.

Good lighting

It’s important that people can easily see the space, so where possible, try to take photographs with good light – fully open blinds and curtains, or wait for a brighter day.  Natural light is best!

Key rooms

Buyers will always like to see the front of your property, and whether there is any outside space.  Other key rooms to include are kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.  Bathroom photos are great, but try to avoid making the toilet the focus!

Be mindful of what’s on view

Take down personal letters from the fridge, watch what you can see in the mirror, make sure that laundry isn’t in view etc.

Think of what you love

Try to capture the aspects of the house that you love, as this will really show in the photographs put out there.  Remember, you are looking to sell the idea of living in the house.
