Upcoming changes to electricity meters

At the end of June there will be some changes to electricity meters, which your energy provider will be in touch about.

The technology that supports Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) electricity meters is going to be turned off on 30 June 2025.

This means that homes with RTS meters may experience disruption to their service unless upgraded, however energy suppliers are working with customers to ensure any changes are made ahead of the switch off.

For more information take a look at the information below, or get in touch with your energy provider who will be responsible for supporting you through the switch off.

What are RTS meters and why are they being turned off?

RTS meters rely on radio signals to do things like turning on and off hot water and switching between on and off peak rates. The equipment used to run the signals is being retired due to its age.

What do you need to do?

Your energy provider will be getting in touch with you to let you know what happens next, which will include being offered an upgrade to a smart meter. This should be at no extra cost to you.

It is important you speak to your energy provider about any questions you have or the options available to you, as well as if you are unsure if the meter in your home will be affected. To make sure you don’t experience any impact to your service, we would recommend contacting your provider well ahead of the switch off.
