During National Hate Crime Awareness Week, we want to share how we are taking action to stop hate crime and make our communities safer. Recently, at one of our properties, a serious hate incident took place.
What happened?
A resident used hurtful and offensive language against their neighbours of an ethnic minority. This was overheard by another person, who reported it to us. As a result, the police stepped in and issued a Community Protection Warning (CPW) to the person responsible. A CPW can be issued to anyone causing persistent or continuing antisocial behaviour that negatively impacts the quality of life in local communities. LiveWest worked with the police by doing a joint visit to show the resident that this behaviour is not acceptable. We also sent a formal warning to the resident, reminding them of the CPW and their actions.
How did we help?
The person who was targeted did exactly what they should—reporting the crime and working with both LiveWest and the police. Since we became involved, the victim has told us there have been no more hateful comments, and they have felt fully supported throughout.
Whilst the hate crime has stopped, there are still issues with noise and shouting in the home. We are also working with Social Services to deal with this problem, and we have agreed to help by offering an exceptional transfer to support the residents affected.
At LiveWest, we do not tolerate hate of any kind. We want our communities to be safe, respectful, and welcoming for everyone. We work closely with the police and other partners to make sure that any bad behaviour, including hate crime, is stopped. If there are any new reports that break the CPW, we will quickly take action and involve the Police.
