Helping you get rid of bulky, unwanted items

This article gives you options for getting rid of large items you no longer want, without damaging the environment or your bank account.

Do you have any large or unwanted items that you want to dispose of in a responsible way? There are several sustainable and convenient options available to help you clear space while also supporting your community and protecting the environment.

Council collection services

Your local council may offer a collection service for bulky items. While you might need to pay a fee, many councils prioritise recycling and reusing items instead of sending them straight to landfill.
Check with your local authority to see what items they will collect and the process involved.

Donate to charity shops

Many charity shops welcome items in good condition, but it's best to confirm what they can accept.
Some charities even offer home collection services for larger items or if you're unable to transport them.
Visit their websites to learn about local terms, conditions, and collection areas.

Support local community groups

Community groups often help distribute food and household goods to those in need, particularly through local support networks.
These groups are often on social media platforms, where you can join pages to stay informed about what items are needed and how to donate.
Check out your local communities on platforms like Facebook to see if you can get involved and help someone else.

Sell items online

You can also choose to sell your items online using platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, or eBay. These platforms are a great way to give your items a second life—just remember to stay safe and avoid sharing too much personal information publicly.
You can find out more on selling on your unwanted items here.

So, if your item(s) are not able to be re-used by anyone else, speak to your local council. They are likely to be able to help you get rid of most things.

Remember though, many of your unwanted items could be used by someone else - even if it's not in the best condition.
