Come along to our Women in Trades Taster Day

Do you enjoy DIY and always wondered if you can make a living from it? Have you always had a desire to pursue a practical career? If so, please sign up to our Women in Trades Taster Day.
Women in Trades Taster Day

We are inviting women interested in a trades career to come along to our taster day on 11 June at Exeter College Construction Centre.

In the next few weeks, we will be recruiting a number of apprentices in a range of trades across the organisation and are committed to increasing the number of women in our trades workforce.

Our taster day is a great opportunity to try your hand at the likes of plumbing, plastering, tiling and carpentry and see if a trades career is for you.

The taster day will take place on 11 June between 9.30am and 2.30pm at Exeter College Construction Centre, Sowton Industrial Estate, Exeter.

The college's tutors and LiveWest tradespeople will help you try various activities such as soldering pipes and building a wall.

The event is open to women with a variety of experience and age levels including those who have no experience at all.

As long as you are 16 and over, we would love to hear from you. The day will enable you to gain an insight into several trades and potentially kick-start your career in the housing sector.

You will also be able to learn more about LiveWest’s apprenticeship programme, which prepares people to enter the skilled trade industry.

Claire Humphries attended one of our taster days in 2022 and is now delighted to be one of our apprentice electricians.

Exeter-based Claire said: “I came out of the taster day 100% sure this is something I wanted to explore.

"The day was great and it gave me the confidence I could do it. “A few weeks later, LiveWest advertised their apprenticeship opportunities, and I applied straight away.

“The whole process was so supportive, and I have never looked back since.”

Liane Sheppard, Director of Property Services for LiveWest, said: “Women are not well represented in skilled trades and we want to address that by giving them opportunities at LiveWest.

“We have some great female role models already working across our trades, but we want more.

“We want to empower more women to pursue a trades career.

“The taster day will be a relaxed, fun look at a number of trades and the chance to have a go to see if you like it.

“What we have found in the past is that if females are empowered to try out these trades, the results can be phenomenal.

“LiveWest is committed to welcoming women colleagues to our trades and this could be the start of an exciting journey for those interested in launching or changing their careers.”

Once you have completed our form we will be in touch with more details. If you are unable to attend but want to find out more about a career in trades, you can find out more by emailing us at womenintrade@livewest.co.uk.
