Lithium batteries are a common source of power for many household electrical items, including vacuum cleaners, laptops, mobile phones, electric scooters and bikes, and electric cigarettes and vapes. In fact, most modern battery powered items now use lithium batteries.

Whilst these are generally safe, damage and misuse can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious fires. Throwing out old lithium batteries in the wrong way can also be dangerous.

Why do battery fires happen?

Battery fires can happen for a few reasons, including:

  • Overheating. This can include in high temperatures, for example in heatwaves.
  • Charging batteries for too long, or on a voltage that is too high.
  • If a battery is damaged, for example through being dropped.

Staying safe when using lithium batteries

To try and avoid fires at home from lithium batteries, you should:

  • Check devices for overheating, or signs of damage. If batteries get too hot when charging or show signs of damage, stop using them.
  • Buy products with lithium batteries from a trusted seller, and only use the charger that came with the device.
  • Keep devices out of direct sunlight or high heat, or particularly cold temperatures.
  • Avoid leaving devices on charge overnight, or more than they need. Charging overnight is particularly dangerous as you may not notice issues.
  • Do not overload sockets.

And remember, if a fire starts, get everyone out safely and call 999.
