How can I reduce my dog’s impact on the environment?
The carbon footprint of an average-size dog is 770 kg of CO2e per year. For a large dog, this increases to 2,500kg of CO2e per year. Most of this carbon is a result of the food that your dog eats.
Dogs can also disturb wildlife, such as ground-nesting birds, when you take them out for a walk.
To reduce your dog’s environmental impact, you can:
- Use compostable poo bags.
- Keep your dog on a lead in nature reserves and areas with ground nesting animals.
- Don’t overfeed your dog and choose eco-friendly food.
- Choose bedding made with natural fibres.
- Be conscious when shopping for toys and avoid plastic where possible.
