Candles are a common feature in many homes, with a wide range of scents and styles readily available, as well as being a popular way to mark special occasions or religious holidays.
Whilst candles are becoming more and more popular, it is important to remember that they are a potential fire risk, with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service estimating more than 50 fires a day are started by candles.
With energy bills rising, some people may turn to using candles to light rooms in order to save money. Increasing your use of candles increases the likelihood of a fire starting, so this should be done with care.
Take a look at our advice for staying safe when using candles below.
Candle safety advice
- Candles should be secure, so they are unable to topple over.
- Materials likely to catch fire, such as furniture or curtains, should not be close to candles.
- Ensure loose clothing or hair does not get too close to lit candles.
- Never leave candles unattended, extinguishing them out when leaving a room or going to bed.
- Avoid burning a candle right down to its holder.
- Blowing candles can lead to sparks flying, so try to use a snuffer or spoon to put them out.
- Candles can get very hot when lit, so avoid touching or moving them when lit. If you need to move a candle, put it out and wait for it to cool down before picking it up.
- If you are using tea lights, it is essential these are in a suitable holder. The foil container they are in can melt due to the heat they get to.
- Consider switching to LED candles. These candles will not get too hot or accidentally burn anyone or anything that gets too close, including children or pets.
